Subject: Converting VMware to Xen
I noticed a link on the enomalism webpage at http://www.enomalism.com/downloads/ that towards the bottom says converting a vmware vm to the proper format is easy, but there are some gotchas....

if you follow the link it errors out I also don't see anything in the wiki/trac about converting them.

Can someone point me to information regarding converting vmware images to the proper format?

Thanks!

We have not actually released the code for the vmware conversion yet, but essentially:
- Provision a new KVM or Xen HVM machine
- Convert your VMWare image to raw format with the instructions here: http://os-drive.com/en/node/7
- Copy this image over top of the existing hard disk root.img or sda.img file that was part of the machine your provisioned in the first step. The file will be in /xen/<UUID of new machine>
- Start the enomalism machine. It should boot right up.

Some issues; graphical boot messages sometimes crash KVM, and paravirt machines may need you to edit the XML to change to a more normal HD image. We will be releasing a plugin module to add this functionality very soon.

as a side note to Derek's post:

also make that your /xen directory is mounted on partition that has enough free space, otherwise it'll be filled pretty quickly causing chain reaction

The instructions at http://os-drive.com/en/node/7 do not appear to apply to new vmfs3 files (VMWare Virtual Infrastructure). These files have a small .vmdk file which points to the data in a *-flat.vmdk file.

Does anyone know how to convert these to the .raw format?

It appears you can do so with the vmkfstools command, but I can't seem to make it work.

I have tried: vmkfstools -i /vmfs/volumes/<volume name>/<machine name>/<machine name>.vmdk -d raw:/vmfs/volumes/path/to/output/file
but it complains that I am missing a vmfsPath

Yeah..I love the idea of getting this system to work, but currently everything is in vmware, so until I can get that to work I'm banging my head against the wall.

Everyone is asking us for VMware support. We're currently speaking with several companies who have offered to sponsor development. In the mean time we'll post some VMware conversion how-to's.

Curious if anyone has worked out how to convert VMware Server 1.04 images of Windows machines?

I have successfully converted a Fedora Linux machine from VMware Server 1.04. However all attempts at converting Windows images fail to get past the initial boot stage.

The instructions at http://os-drive.com/en/node/7 seem like they could work, however it appears to me there are some glitches in the flow of the script. Anyone had any success converting Windows VMware images?
